Death of the midwife
How we lost the art of spiritual birth & gave rise to government-owned birth
Historically, birth was stewarded by priestesses.
It was well known to our ancient foremothers that pregnancy and birth was a time of portal-opening, when a woman would walk between two worlds, traversing the dimensional spaces. She would hold two (or more) spirits in her body, making her spiritually heightened, & shamanic in nature. She was accompanied by a guardian of the realms, a priestess of the womb.
During the birthing process, the priestess would hold the ceremonial space, protect the portal, and unconditionally trust the mother so that the mother could safely leave her body and transcend the Earthly existence to let this Spirit pass through her.
This was a sacred journey, an initiation by the Goddess and the Great Cosmic Mystery Herself, to become the woman she needed to in order to mother the Soul moving through her loins.
These priestesses were the original midwives; they were the guardians of the thresholds and keepers of the liminal realities.
The original midwives were called into this space to steward a mother into her deepest initiation with love, devotion, confidence, and fierceness surrounding her. They were called to support the mother in finding her edges, collapsing timelines, releasing her illusions, dropping her resistances, and becoming to conduit for this alternate reality.
They were designed to facilitate a graceful transition into motherhood, to hold the hands of their sisters, and reflect back the eternal power that sacred feminine held confidently.
Midwives were never designed to pathologize, diagnose, or assess a mothers condition.
Midwives were designed to listen to the silence, interpret the signs, and respond to the energetic frequency arising.
A midwife’s greatest asset was how well she listened and how deeply she intuited, rather than how long she studied or how much she “knew.”
Midwives were oracles, mystics, and seers.
They were not keepers of man’s law or government’s medicine.
When the matriarchy was destroyed, the sacred feminine sites, rituals, and ceremonies were stolen and appropriated. Elaborate rituals were done in womb temples to hijack the ley lines of this planet and to co-opt the Earth’s matrix.
The womb became a dangerous place and birth became “perverted.”
The art of bleeding, ovulating, birthing, and pausing all became desirous. Men with unhealthy curiosities and perverted fetishes began to study, dissect, and desecrate this holy sanctuary.
Enslaved women were tortured, maimed, and killed in the name of gynecology, all of which were well documented.
Birth became something to control, delineate, manage, and harvest.
With the rise of industrial allopathic medicine, birth would become a place of grave danger for both babies and mothers, while midwives would become extinct.
The wise women would be psychologically tortured, burnt, drowned, hung, & imprisoned. Sisters would turn against each other in desperation. The wisdom of the womb would be demonized, shamed, and desecrated.
Eventually, the midwife would take cover underground, while the state would create institutions of medicine to oversee the populace. These institutions would become male-dominated, women-hating, and power-oriented.
Women would become victims to their bodies, their babies, and the act of childbirth. They would be helpless in the eyes of the state, too dumb to make decisions, and property of the men around her. They would become subject to torture, medical experiments, gaslighting, and abuse. They would lose all agency of their body and their baby in the eyes of the state.
Through the use of ritualistic abuse, women would slowly become accustomed to birth as labor, pregnancy as suffering, and motherhood as martyrdom.
Generation by generation, women would become compliant to the torture of state medicine as it continued to erode their intuition and sense of self. Through various forms of drugging, women would forget their ability to become pregnant, to give birth, to mother, yet most of all… claim their power.
Underground midwives would serve in the woods, until one day the state would realize they could capture midwifery. They offered elder midwives “amnesty” to practice their medicine without their training. This “amnesty” would begin the birth of medical midwifery, a state institutionalized space to serve women. Year after year, the state would create more guidelines and rules to midwifery, until one day the midwives realized they were now under the same regulations as the male-dominated, woman-hating, power hungry state of medicine.
Many of our elder midwives are returning to their roots, rejecting the state governance, and claiming the gifts that have been passed down from woman-to-woman.
These elders are returning to the priestesshood, the Goddess-appointed stewardship, a sacred birth keeper, and portal holder. No longer can our elders call themselves “midwives,” instead they are stewards, birth keepers, and wise women.
The term “midwife” is now owned governmentally, by man’s law, which means midwives no longer hold the hands of women spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Midwife is no longer a sacred portal holder, but an agent of the institution, which serves to assist, diagnose, fix, and control.
This isn’t an attack on the women in midwifery, but a call to the heart to remember the innate beauty and divinity of stewarding new life.
May all wombs know sovereignty.
May all breasts know nourishment.
May all women remember the Goddess within.
For the liberation of all bodies, minds, and spirits,
